About this tool

The readability checker scores your text with the Flesch Reading Ease formula (0–100, higher is easier), the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and the Gunning Fog index (the US school grade needed to understand it). It also reports words, sentences, average sentence length, reading time and the share of complex words, then lists your longest sentences so you know exactly what to shorten.

Writers and SEOs use it to keep content accessible, plain language ranks and converts better.

How to use

  • 1. Paste your text, scores update live.
  • 2. Aim for Flesch 60–70 for general audiences.
  • 3. Rewrite the long sentences listed under the scores to raise it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch score?

60–70 is plain English, readable by most adults. 90–100 is very easy (comics); below 30 is academic-difficult.

What does grade level mean?

The US school grade a reader needs, grade 8 means an average 13–14 year old can understand it. Aim for 8 or below on the web.

What is the Gunning Fog index?

Another grade-level estimate that weighs complex words (3+ syllables) more heavily. Under 12 suits a wide audience.

How are syllables counted?

With a vowel-group heuristic tuned for English, accurate enough for scoring, not a dictionary lookup.

Is it free?
