SHA-256 Hash Generator
One-way SHA-256 fingerprints for any text or file, computed locally, never uploaded.
Hashes update live as you type. SHA-1 is shown for legacy checksums only, it is no longer collision-resistant.
About this tool
Generates SHA-256 (and SHA-384, SHA-512 or legacy SHA-1) hashes of any text or file using your browser's built-in Web Crypto API. The same input always produces the same fingerprint, and it is computationally infeasible to reverse, ideal for checksums, data integrity and fingerprinting.
Paste a published checksum into the compare box to verify a download in one step. Hashing happens on your device; your text and files are never sent anywhere.
How to use
- 1. Type or paste text, or choose a file.
- 2. Pick the algorithm, the hash appears instantly.
- 3. Optionally paste an expected checksum to verify it matches.
Frequently asked questions
What is SHA-256 used for?
Verifying file integrity, checksums, Git and blockchain data, and fingerprinting data where reversal must be impossible.
Can a SHA-256 hash be reversed?
No, it is a one-way function. The only way to 'reverse' it is guessing inputs, which is why it is unsafe for short passwords without a slow password hash.
Is it free?
Yes, unlimited, no signup.
Why does it need a secure connection?
Browsers only expose the Web Crypto API on HTTPS or localhost, this page qualifies.
